And now the rules...
EPIC's eBook Awards™, formerly known as EPPIE, began in 2000 to recognize excellence in ePublished works. The eBook Awards are open to all electronically published works: novels, graphic novels, short stories, non-fiction, and poetry.
Eligibility and Rules
1. Entries for EPIC's eBook Competition™ will be accepted from June 1, 2012 through July 15, 2012.
2. Entries must be published in English and released for sale between June 1, 2011 through May 31, 2012. They must include a publication date and must be submitted "as the product sells". This includes self- and subsidy-published books.
- Re-released books are eligible provided they have not been previously entered in this competition; this includes annual books (yearbooks, guides, etc.).
- A "buy link" must be provided, which shows the book is for sale. This will normally be on the publisher's website. If the book is self-published, the link may be to an on-line bookseller or the author's website. Please provide a link which goes directly to the book, not the publisher's or author's homepage.
- Electronic versions of books previously released in print format may be entered if eBook version meets entry requirements.
- A maximum 10,000 word count is required for entries in the Short Story category. A short story may only be entered if it was offered for sale as a stand-alone work.
- A maximum 30,000 word count is required for entries in the Novella category. A novella may only be entered if it was offered for sale as a stand-alone work.
- Anthologies must not exceed 200,000 word count.
- Multi-author anthologies must be entered by either the editor or publisher.
- Single-author anthologies must be entered by the author.
- A minimum 30,000 word count is required for Non-Fiction and all categories under Fiction and Romance.
- No minimum word count is required for Children, Graphic Novels, and Poetry.
3. Entrants are not limited to the number of titles they may enter, however, the same work may not be entered in more than one category.
4. Works portraying pedophilia, bestiality (this does not apply in respect to Paranormal shape-shifters), necrophilia, and/or snuff as acceptable sexual practices will be disqualified without notification or refund.
- The age of sexual consent varies from state to state, country to country (or world to world); works containing sexual situations involving human protagonists, under the acceptable American legal age of eighteen (18) years, must be reviewed by the Competition Chair prior to entry.
5. The entry form must be completed with all required information entered accurately.
- This is the responsibility of the entrant. Contact the Competitions Chair at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you have any questions, before you submit your entry or upload your book(s).
6. No category changes will occur during any stage of the competition due to entrant error.
7. Entries must be submitted in non-DRM PDF format.
8. The entry file name must be in the following format: Category code-Title.pdf.
- For works which are part of a series, only the unique title should be used, not the series title. For example, a Historical work (category F4) which carries the title, Book V of the High Fliers of the Wild Circus: Trapeze Boys, would be entered as F4-TrapezeBoys.pdf.
- Before you upload, make sure the name of the file you are uploading is as required. Improperly named entries will be disqualified without notification or refund.
- For guidance on renaming your files, refer to the FAQs.
9. Non-compliance with these rules will result in disqualification without refund.
10. All questions should be directed to EPIC’s Competition Chair: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
The entry form will be available on June 1, 2012.
Entry Fee: $25 for EPIC members, $35 for non members.
Payments will be made electronically as part of the entry process.
Codes and Categories
In the interests of continuing to uphold the highest standards of excellence in electronic publishing, EPIC and EPIC's Competitions Committee retain the right to dissolve any category, announcing no finalist or winner, if the judges determine that no entries in a particular category should be named finalists. In such a case, no entry fees shall be refunded.
At no time will any scores be shared with entrants.
Each category requires a minimum of ten (10) entries. At the discretion of the Competitions Committee, categories not meeting this criterion may be cancelled and entry fees refunded.
Hints on selecting your category are in the eBook FAQs. Please review the categories carefully. Work(s) legally forbidden for sale to minors due to sexual content must be entered in the Erotica category or the appropriate Romance category, if the work conforms to the romance genre convention. The left column contains the codes to use when naming the entry PDF file.
