EPIC SPOTLIGHT: Lucy Felthouse

1

Bio…

During Lucy’s first year studying Creative Writing at the University of Derby, she was dared to write an erotic story. It went down a storm and she's never looked back. Lucy has had stories published by Cleis Press, Noble Romance, Ravenous Romance, Summerhouse Publishing and Xcite Books. Find out more at http://www.lucyfelthouse.co.uk. You can also find her on Facebook and Twitter.

What do you think the next big thing in the industry is?

As I'm from the UK, I'm still watching the rise of eBooks with interest. The US market is so much more mature and you have several eReaders on the market. Here, though, we only really have the Kindle and the Sony eReader. I think once other companies catch onto the growth of eBooks, other readers will be launched here.

What genres do you think are up and coming or waning?

Again, from a UK perspective, I think erotica is growing. This is largely due to the rise in the popularity of eBooks. Not every person would be happy to sit on a bus or in a café reading an erotic book because people would be able to see. But with the advent of eBooks, people can now sit wherever they want and read whatever they like without anyone having a clue! All they'll be faced with is an innocent looking pink cover (in my case) and a reader wearing a big smile!

As an erotica and erotic romance writer, I think this growth is great. It means more opportunities for writers, and also, as a reader, more variety!

How long have you been writing? How long have you been published?

I've been writing since I could use a pen. But I only started to take fiction writing more seriously at University when I did my degree. At around the same time, a clever soul suggested I have a go at writing an erotic story. I did, and I've never looked back. My first piece was published in 2006 and since then I've clocked up quite a few publications and I'm still writing hard!

What genres do you write?

I write erotica and erotic romance. Sub-genres include contemporary, paranormal and f/f.

Are there any genres you'd like to try but haven't?

Yes, I'd like to write some m/m erotica and/or erotic romance. It's definitely on the cards as soon as I find the time!

Are there any genres you'd never consider writing in? I'd never say never, but I tend to write within the genres I enjoy reading. Having said that, I have written stories for submission calls within genres that I haven't particularly liked and seem to have done well out of it. Which definitely backs up the 'never say never' part!

What's your writing process?

I'm all over the place! I'm a total pantser. Sometimes I write directly onto the computer and other times I'll write in a notebook and type it up. It just depends on how the mood takes me, I guess. If I'm in the flow, the computer works best. If I'm struggling, I'll take a notebook into another room (i.e. nowhere near email or social media!) and work it out.

If you could choose two authors to be seated between at a signing...or to have your books shelved between in the bookstore, who would they be?

Wow, that's an excellent question! I guess I'd choose to be seated between Anne Rice and Charlaine Harris, in the hope that their success would rub off on me!

How many books do you read in the average month? e-Book or print or both?

I read both print and eBook, in equal amounts. On average I probably get through 1.5 books in a week. So around six a month.

What is your ideal location to write a book, if you had the money to live there or sequester yourself there?

Paris, undoubtedly. I'm sure this answer will change with time but currently, the story bubbling around in my head that's desperate to be told is set in Paris. It's a sequel to one of my stories and I'm actually visiting Paris (for the second time) later this year to do more research. But if money were no object I'd move there while writing it!

If you could have a book signing anywhere in the world, where would you like to go?

Most places in the US! From what I can tell from my US writing contacts, the erotica scene is so much more accepted over there (in certain areas, of course) and the readings are much more frequent. Erotic readings in the UK are sadly few and far between and even finding a bookshop with erotic books on the shelves is a rare thing, which is why I get so excited when it happens!

What's your dream car? Your favorite car you've ever owned?

I don't have my sights set too high. I'd love a new pink Ford Fiesta with all the mod cons! To have built in Bluetooth and to be able to plug in my iPhone and listen to music while it charges would be awesome. Sorry, I'm a geek!

The #1 holiday or birthday gift to purchase for an author is...

Honestly? Book vouchers! Unless you know a person really, really well it's tough to buy gifts. There are only so many toiletries one person can reasonably use at once…

Your favorite leisure activity or vacation spot?

I haven't been to enough places to be able to name a favourite holiday spot. But in terms of leisure activities, I love to go walking in the beautiful British countryside.

Where do you get your character names?

Oh dear, this one's embarrassing. I have two Apps on my iPhone, one for baby girl names and one for baby boys. I open them and scroll through until I find a name that fits!

When and where do you do the bulk of your writing?

When can be any time. It used to be mainly in the evening when I was in my old job. Now I'm working for myself on a freelance basis so I can squeeze writing in whenever I like. It's great because it means I can write when I'm feeling the most creative. Of course it means I'm sometimes doing freelance work at ten o clock at night, but that's a small price to pay to be able to get more words on the page.

As for the where, the spare room in the house is my "office" and is where my laptop lives. Hence, it's where I do most of my writing.

What are your writing goals? Where do you want to be in a year? Five years?

I would really like to have a full length novel out by the time I'm thirty. So I really need to get a move on, only four and a bit years to go!

If you could have one magical power, what would it be and why?

Invisibility. Think of the fun you could have – and the story fodder you could discover!
