I have a small hamburger shop on the corner. My burgers are the best in the city. People gladly pay the $5 a piece to enjoy them. A person comes into my shop and demands that I give him a burger because he has a right to it. He comes behind the counter and takes a burger. Then he goes out on the street and sells if for $1.

Did he steal from me?

Check out Scott Cleland’s piece on Forbes today: Google’s Piracy Liability. Scott does an admirable job of explaining why the biggest "innovators" and technological companies may not be in favor of improved copyright protections for authors, artists, musicians etc.

EPIC member and Canadian, Patricia Bates has created a petition available on her blog for Canadian Members only that's aimed at getting the Minister in Charge of Bill C11 to look at much tougher laws for copyright violations in the digital industry.
Non-Canadians may not sign the petition (or if they do, it probably won't count), but please do help Patricia by sharing this URL with your Canadian friends and colleagues.

To rebut some of the points made by the anti-Copyright Protection writer, many “rogue sites” appear to be legitimate, a message conveying that a particular site has been blocked by order of a United States District Court can have an important educational effect for subscribers,

This is a powerful, comprehensive, and highly readable article by shiloh in which she explains the devastating effects of copyright infringement, and answers some of the most common "justifications" that pirates and digital parasites favor.

In another post I mentioned this article on CNN in which their reporter's entire premise (about why he dislikes the new Amazon lending program for Prime Users) hinges on his false statement that if you buy an e-book "You Own The Content And Can Do What You Like With It".

Another possibly misinformed correspondent on ZDNET publishes his opinion that free speech rights are in danger.
ZDNET: New House of Representatives bill may strangle the Internet or nerf the First Amendment

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/government/new-house-of-representatives-bill-may-strangle-the-internet-or-nerf-the-first-amendment/10963

The Copyright Alliance rebuts this premise.

"Rogue websites exist to benefit from the theft of other's intellectual property no one has provided even a single example of a rogue site that contains speech protected by theFirst Amendment.
Helpful Facts:

Myth: "Make no mistake about it, the SOPA legislation is running right up against our First Amendment rights."

Business Insider also publishes a somewhat partisan view (from the Free Information lobby)
Fred Wilson in Business Insider http://www.businessinsider.com/protecting-the-safe-harbors-of-the-dmca-and-protecting-jobs-2011-10#comment-4eb3e221eab8eaa720000054
